Cultural region - World War II
In Houffalize and its surroundings, several sites commemorate the region’s role during World War II, particularly in the Battle of the Bulge. Houffalize itself was heavily bombed in January 1945, leaving the town in ruins. Key war-related landmarks include:
Sherman Tank Memorial: This tank, left as a monument in the town center, serves as a reminder of the liberation of Houffalize by American forces in January 1945.
Bastogne War Museum: Located nearby, the Bastogne War Museum offers an immersive experience into the events of the Battle of the Bulge, providing historical context through exhibits, personal stories, and artifacts from the war.
Mardasson Memorial: Also in Bastogne, this impressive star-shaped monument honors the American soldiers who fought in the Battle of the Bulge. It’s a moving tribute to the sacrifices made during one of the war’s most significant battles.
